Australian Talent Conference (ATC) May 2009

The third Australian Talent Conference was held in Sydney over 3 days in May. The conference was a success in the sense that it provided the opportunity to join the industry and focus on the theme THE NEW CHALLENGE: Talent Strategies For Tough Times. How would organisations be able to do more with less, in a time where the workforce is rapidly changing?

The conference provided a great opportunity to network with and listen to speakers in the field who were able to share their experiences and first-hand advice on achieving business objectives in today's financially difficult market - some very successful Australian and international organisations are currently adopting innovative and cost-effective approaches to talent management in the current environment.

Unlike any other time in history, organisations today face an interesting paradox, with a long-term skills shortage and an ageing workforce on one hand and economic pressure to drive workforce efficiencies and cut labour costs on the other. In light of these challenges, they will still need to retain their best talent; utilise technology in smarter ways; be much more productive, redeploy talent where possible, and train, re-train and equip talent to continue driving the business forward.

All of this must continue despite recruitment freezes, budget cuts, limited discretionary spend and leadership teams who will consider investment requests with scepticism.

The conference was able to provide participants with a range of options, solutions and networks that could provide answers to these types of issues. A large focus was on practical solutions and tangible take-aways that could be used to optimise your talent management strategy, while giving your HR function visibility and recognition for increasing business performance.
